Description
Mt. Yari is the fifth tallest mountain in Japan at 3180 m and one of Japan's top 100 mountains (Hyakumeizan). It can be seen along the Northern Japan Alps and looks like a spear thrust into the sky. Because of the resemblance, it has earned the nickname "the Matterhorn of Japan."

The hike begins in Kamikochi and continues all the way to the end of the valley (near Yoko'o). From there, the trail begins to climb and eventually reaches the Yarisawa Lodge. Approximately 5 hours beyond this is the Yarigatake Sanso lodge, and then 30 minutes to the peak of Yari. The full hike takes about 20 hours so it is recommended to climb it over 3 to 4 days.
