Happo Pond

Matsumoto Northern Alps Area 八方池

Happo-ike is a gem of a pond nestled high in the Northern Japanese Alps, surrounded by the Hakuba Range. On a clear day, the pond reflects the 3000-meter Shirouma peaks. Despite its lofty location, the pond is a brisk 90-minute 1.5 km hike from the highest chair lift. The trail follows a ridge line offering picture-perfect vistas of the Alps as well as the Hakuba Valley down below. Along the way is a treasure trove of wildflowers. The more adventurous (and properly prepared) climbers can proceed up to 2696-meter Mt. Karamatsu. On the other hand, more timid people can enjoy the panorama view from Happo-ike Sanso, the lodge at the top of the chair lift.
Hakuba is mecca for alpine trekking, and Happo Pond is by far the most popular hike.
