The Kiso Valley and Ina areas of southern Nagano share a tradition with neighboring Aichi and Gifu Prefectures for making a delicious snack called Gohei Mochi. Mochi sticky rice is usually made from a variety of rice used specifically for mochi. Gohei Mochi, on the other hand, is made from normal white rice. It is pounded into a sticky cake, stuck on a skewer, coated in a sweet sauce and aromatically cooked over a flame. Gohei mochi is traditionally offered at shrines in the spring and fall to pray for a good harvest.
Yamagiri Shokudo’s hand-made gohei mochi shop in historical Tsumago-juku (Nagiso Town) is especially popular.
