Nagano Prefecture, with its favorable climate and high elevation, grows delicious, fleshy apples with great color and sweetness. The number two producer of apples in Japan, its Fuji variety has become its most popular. There are many varieties starting with “Tsugaru” in summer and finishing with the classic “Fuji”. In between there are many others, such as the heritage variety “Kogyoku” whose tartness makes it perfect for apple pies, and varieties unique to Nagano such as “Shinano Sweet” and “Shinano Gold”.
Besides apples, Nagano is a major producer of grapes, pears and peaches, as well as prunes, apricots, plums, Ikeda persimmons, walnuts and blueberries.
