Hello! I will be visiting Japan at the end of April / start of May with my partner. This will be our second time visiting and we would like to see some places that we didn\\\’t visit on our last trip, mainly Nagano! However, it seems like such a vast area, I don\\\’t know where to begin. We have 3 days and would like to see some nature, do some hiking, visit some onsens and drink some sake 😉 would you have any recommendations on where to base ourselves? Would Nagano city be a good base? We will have the JR pass and will likely be coming from Tokyo. Any recommendations are most appreciated. Arigatou gozaimasu, Fraser

Hi there,

Nagano City or Matsumoto City would be a good place to start.

Nagano City is home to Zenko-ji temple and day trips can be made to Togakushi, the Snow Monkeys, Shigakogen, Obuse (see digital pamphlets), and Nozawa Onsen Village.

Matsumoto City is home to Matsumoto Castle and day trips can be made to Kamikochi, Norikura, Asama Onsen, and Narai-juku.

For sake, you may be interested in visiting the Masuichi Brewery in Obuse, Nishinomon Yoshinoya in Nagano City (located here), these breweries in Matsumoto, or the Suwa Gokura breweries in Suwa City.

It all depends on which sights interest you the most. I hope this gives you a better idea of what each area has to offer. And don’t hesitate to ask any other questions!
