Things to do in Nagano

We will be visiting to Nagano on 28th Dec 2017 from Hakuba. We will spend a day there and will head to Kanazawa in the evening. Our plan is to visit Zenkoji temple and Snow Monkey park but we had been to Snow Monkey Park before and my wife doesn’t want to go there again. Is there any other activity or location that we can go instead of Snow Monkey Park within 1 day?

Hi Ethan,

Depending on the weather during your visit, there are several options open to you. If it’s snowy, I recommend visiting nearby Togakushi and snowshoeing around its mystical forest. You can also walk along a lane of 400-year-old cedar trees leading to Togakushi’s Okusha shrine. Snowshoe rentals are available at the Togakushi ski resort. You can find more information about activities in Togakushi here.

Another option would be to visit Obuse, about 30 min. from Nagano City via the Nagano Dentetsu train line. The town is filled with stylish cafes in traditional Japanese-style buildings that serve sweets made with locally-grown produce (apples, chestnuts, etc.). It also has several art museums, including the Hokusaikan which is dedicated to Katsushika Hokusai, arguably one of Japan’s most famous artists. For more information, see this pamphlet about Obuse.

I hope that answers your question!

Hi Blair,

Thanks for your info.

Let’s say we decided to go to Togakushi area will it be enough time?

I’ll be coming to Nagano from Hakuba using the express bus. I checked the bus timing and earliest bus is 6:20 and after that is 8:20. So let’s say we’ll take the 8:20 bus and reach to Nagano by 9:35.

Can we cover Togakushi and Zenkoji before heading for Kanazawa in the evening.

Hi Ethan,

The trip to Togakushi takes about 60-70 minutes by bus (see the green season bus timetable here). You could visit Zenkoji after your arrival to Nagano City and then take the bus to arrive in Togakushi before 13:00. You can have lunch there and then enjoy snowshoeing for a few hours before returning to Nagano in the late afternoon/evening. You should have plenty of time.

The Togakushi bus timetable will change to the winter schedule in mid-December, so please check the link again in mid-November for the revised version.

Hello

I and my family plan to visit  Nagano to Nozawa onsen and Togari hot springs on 28 oct .  Plan to Visit Money park on 29 oct .  But the weather forecast said there will be rain and typhoon.  What is your suggestion to this plan?  We will rent a car  while we are in Nagano, so pls kindly recommend.

Thank you

Hi Giko bee,

If there’s heavy rain, I would not recommend visiting the Snow Monkey Park. Instead, you could travel south to the town of Obuse (about 30 min. by car). The town has a nice, traditional atmosphere and plenty of cafes and museums where you can stay dry. You can see more information about Obuse here, and more about museums around Nagano prefecture here. If you have any other questions, please let me know!

Hi Blair,

I believe we will most likely go to Togakushi’s Okusha shrine and you recommended to try snowshoeing around its mystical forest. Is this mystical forest is on the way from Togakushi ski resort to Okusha shrine? Since you mentioned snowshoe needs to rent from Tagakushi ski resort so I believe we must take bus to ski resort first to rent the snowshoe.

I already checked the timetable it takes around 75 minutes to reach Ski resort from Nagano station.

May I know how long will it take to reach if we walk to Okusha upper shrine from ski resort?

Is there any pass to cover all those bus and snowshoe rental?

The whole area of Togakushi is shrouded in forest. The path to the Okusha shrine is the most picturesque with its 400-year-old cedar trees. You will definitely find them on your way to the shrine from the ski resort.

The walk from the ski resort to the entrance of the Okusha shrine takes about 25 minutes, then 30 minutes along the Okusha walking path to the shrine itself. Nearby are many other nature trails that you can enjoy as well. Take a look at this walking map (Japanese) for an idea of the trails around Togakushi. (Okusha Shrine is 奥社, Togakushi Ski Resort is 戸隠スキー場).

You can purchase the “Togakushi Kogen Free Kippu” pass for 2,600 yen to save on your trip. Roundtrip between Nagano City and the Togakushi Ski Resort is normally 2,800 yen, so you’ll save 200 yen on your bus fare. It also can get you a discount at some restaurants around the area (list of places in Japanese). It doesn’t, however, cover snowshoe rentals.

I hope that helps!

Hi Blair,

Thanks for your information.
May I know how much is the snow shoe rental?

I also tried to find out more info about Togakushi Kogen Free Kippu and found out that it covers round trip from Nagano to Togakushi and buses in Togakushi region and round trip between Nagano and Zenkoji temple.

It’ll be great since this pass will cover all the places we want to visit in Nagano.

When you arrive at the ski resort, you can rent snowshoes from Soba Restaurant Togakure. The prices aren’t listed on their website, but they generally cost 1,000 yen per person for the day.
