Hi there,

The skies are certainly clearer during winter and therefore you should be able to see beautiful starry skies. However, the highlands where you can see them best will be very cold in late November so please remember to dress warmly when you visit.

Achi Mura is well-known as a star gazing spot for its Star Village Achi. During November, however, it will be closed (runs from April 15th to October 21st, 2017, with a special winter program during December to March). You should be able to see stars from Achi Village regardless.

Other places where you can see starry skies include Utsukushigahara Kogen, Norikura Kogen, and Nobeyama. I have included some links below:

Utsukushigahara Kogen:

Norikura Kogen:

Nobeyama:

I wouldn’t personally recommend camping overnight in late November unless you are well-stocked in winter gear. There are hotels near these areas which you can find on online booking sites such as tripadvisor or on our accommodations page.

I hope that answers your question!

Thank you so much for the reply. It’s a pity we will not be able to attend the events due to the dates of our travel. We are driving a camper van , that is why we were thinking of parking it and camp overnight for the starry skies after maybe doing onsen nearby.

Sorry to trouble you again, but do you know any michi no eki/ park or rest area where we can park overnight for stargazing in Nagano area ?

Parking overnight at rest areas/michi-no-eki is a grey area that I cannot specifically comment on. While there may not be signs that say “No Overnight Parking,” it isn’t necessarily allowed. In the end, it will depend on the management of each area.

Instead, you could stay at a campsite like the Urugi Hoshinomori Camp-jo. It would cost about 2,000 yen to park there, but you have access to bathroom and cooking facilities, as well as wooded park area to enjoy. Reservations are required, so if you would like to stay, please contact them through the Nagano Multilingual Call Center.

I hope that helps answer your question
