Hello,

we are going to visit Japan in September this year and we need to make a decision if we want to visit Nagoya or Matsumoto for 2 days. What would you suggest? We have never visited Japan before. Other cities we are visiting are Tokyo, Hakone, Kyoto, Hiroshima & Osaka

Thank you in advance!

Kind regards,

Carolyn

Hi Carolyn,

I may be biased, but I would recommend visiting Matsumoto during your trip. Matsumoto City is home to Matsumoto Castle, and there are plenty of beautiful highland areas nearby such as Kamikochi and Norikura Kogen. You can enjoy hot springs in places like Asama Onsen, Utsukushigahara Onsen, or Shirahone Onsen, and also visit the old post towns of the Nakasendo like Narai, Tsumago, and Magome.

Since you’ll be visiting plenty of other large cities (Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto), I think it would be nice to see more of the countryside.

To reach Matsumoto, I recommend taking the Super Express Azusa from Shinjuku Station (about 150 min.). After your stay in Matsumoto, you can head to Kyoto using the JR Chuo line (220 min.) or Wide View Shinano (130 min.) and changing to the Hikari Shinkansen (52 min.) at Nagoya. Along the way, you can stop at Narai Station (Narai), Nagiso Station (Tsumago), or Nakatsugawa Station (Magome) to see the Nakasendo. I recommend using the Hyperdia Website to plan your train travel.

I hope that helps answer your question.
