I am visiting Nagano on 1-5 Dec. I wanted to go sora terrace, but I learned that it is closed during the time I visit. My plan is ski in karuzawa resort, karuzawa waterfall, zenkoji temple andmasumoto castle. I found that there is still time for us to visit a few more places. Any recommendation?

Hi Vevee,

Thanks for your question. In December, I recommend visiting Nagano’s year-round sights, such as Zenkoji Temple, Matsumoto Castle, and the Snow Monkey Park.

If you’d like to see mountain scenery, you could visit Senjojiki Cirque in Southern Nagano. Due to its high elevation, there should be snow at the Cirque during your visit.

You may also want to visit some hot springs areas to warm up during your stay. You can enjoy a traditional hot spring town atmosphere in Yudanaka & Shibu Onsen (next to the Snow Monkey Park) or Nozawa Onsen, or stay in a more secluded hot spring area like Bessho Onsen or Shirahone Onsen. At Togura Kamiyamada Onsen, you can take English-language walking or cycling tours between dips in its many baths.

I hope that helps answer your question.

Hi Blair,

Thnaks for your reply that help a lot! I have a few more questions here:

  1. Heard that Sora terrace will open on 1st December 2018, is that right? Dose cafe and ski open as well? I am visiting on 2nd December.
  2. I wanted to visit Azumino Alps park, they will decorate beautiful light during the night time but I have to take taxi from  Toyoshina Stn. Would it be hard to find a taxi there. The park is open 4pm to 9pm I planed to visit 5-8pm on 1 December.

Thanks,

Vevee

Hi Vevee,

I’m glad I can be of help.

The SORA terrace is planned to open again for the winter season on December 1st. The top of the mountain will be open for skiing as well and its three ski courses are all suitable for beginners. The reason I didn’t mention it previously is because it is difficult to reach the gondola at the beginning of winter unless you ski or snowboard there (the base of the mountain and the gondola are connected by a series of lifts). If you can ski, then it should be no problem.

For people who want to visit the terrace without using skis, Ryuo offers a snowcat ride up to the gondola beginning in late December (around the 22nd). The package includes roundtrip gondola fare and costs 3,000 yen.

2. There should be taxis at Toyoshina Station when you arrive. Both the Azumino Kanko taxi service and Nan’an taxi service stop there. If you would like to make a reservation in advance, or if no cars are there when you arrive, you can call Nagano’s multilingual call center for assistance.

I hope that helps!

Hi Vevee,

Before December 15th, you’ll need to get a taxi from Yudanaka station (Nagano Dentetsu Railway). It will take about 15 minutes to reach Ryuo, and cost about 3,500 yen one way.

Hi Blair,

Many thanks for your advices. Taking a taxi is fine for us. However, we are traveling to many places around nagano, so we want to consider hiring a driver as well, any recommendations?

Cheers,

Vevee

Hi Vevee,

The Okushamae Naosuke restaurant outside of the entrance to the Togakushi Okusha shrine offers boot and snowshoe rentals (see this blog post for details). I don’t believe that snow will have accumulated that much around the Togakushi area in early December, but you can check these live cameras of the area as your trip approaches.
