Hi there,

I will be travelling to the area in a week and half with my family – we are 2 adults and 2 children (6 years and 2 years)

We would like to tour for about 4 days in the Nagano area, maybe head on to Matsumoto, Takyama, maybe shirakawa-go (If its not all too far). I am not looking for a long route.
what itinerary would you suggest for 3-4 days. We are coming from Tokyo and already have a night booked in Nagano (2nd Feb) and we are looking to fill 3 more night before going back to Tokyo (or Hakone).
Also – how would you travel – by train, shuttle or car (with 2 kids it get hard – but the roads must be dangerous this season)?

Thank you,

E-tai

Hi E-tai,

I can give you a quick suggestion for a route you may enjoy during winter. I’ve put you staying in Nagano for three nights, as I think moving from hotel to hotel may be difficult and tiring for a family of four. Also, it may be hard to find hotels in other parts of Nagano with just a week left to reserve.

Day 1

Day 2

Day 3

  • Nagano Station to Narai Station
  • Visit Narai-juku
  • Narai Station to Matsumoto Station
  • Take a soba-making lesson
  • Visit Matsumoto Castle, Nawate-dori and Nakamachi-dori streets
  • Matsumoto Station to Nagano Station
  • Stay in Nagano City

Day 4

  • Nagano Station to Karuizawa Station
  • Snow activities at Karuizawa Prince Snow Resort
  • Lunch at Karuizawa Prince Shopping Mall, shopping, etc.
  • Karuizawa Station to Tokyo

For transportation, renting a car would be the most convenient but if you aren’t comfortable driving in snow you may want to stick to trains and buses. For your first and second day, you can use the 2-Day Snow Monkey Pass to save some money while using trains and buses between the snow monkey park and Nagano Station (including Obuse).

I hope that helps answer your question.
