Hi, I am planning to go for hiking and camping in Kamikochi for 3-4 days in this August (summer holidays). I have “Naturehike 2, super lightweight waterproof 4 seasons tent” and “NatureHike Down Mummy Type Duck Winter Sleeping Bag” which can support upto -10℃~-20℃. I am just worried about the cold there, and whether i should be buying new tent and bag for this trip. I will be doing it again in Autumn (October) and need your suggestions how should i plan and what should i buy which can support me for August as well as October trip. Best Regards, Santosh
During summer, the average high is near 22°C and the low is around 10°C, possibly dropping lower in especially cold weather or high altitudes. During autumn, the temperatures will usually be between 15°C during the day to 0°C at night. Since your sleeping bag supports up to -10 to -20°C, you should be fine as long as you are staying in the valley or at altitudes of 2,000m or less.
Also, be sure to bring winter clothing in October as it may snow in the higher altitude areas of Kamikochi.
You can find more information about Kamikochi at the sites below:
I hope that answers your question!
Thanks a lot for your suggestions and answers
You’re welcome, Santosh! I hope you have a safe trip.
I have one more questions considering the current weather there.
I am going to Kamikochi tomorrow for next 1 week and the forecast says that its likely to rain every day, and few days heavy rain in the valley.
Is it a good idea?
I am sorry I was not able to answer your question earlier as I just returned to the office. You may already be in Kamikochi now. The weather forecast has been poor and I hope that you haven’t gotten too wet.
My recommendation: if you have waterproof gear, then visit Kamikochi regardless and stay for as long as you feel comfortable. If it starts to get bad, retreat to Matsumoto and visit the castle and museums instead. If you would like any recommendations of other places to visit, please let me know.
