Hello, I am traveling with my partner and he loves Skiing, I love onsens and I am looking for a traditional japanese style hotel, where we have an open air onsen steps away for entering  and he can go to ski at night. We are also spending Christmas there. So a couple of questions : 1.-is the 25th of december everything open?  2.- Which Ryokan do you recommend for us that does not break our wallet 3.- We are taking our flight back to Mexico from Narita on the 26th of December. Do you recommend taking the train straight from Nagano to Narita? If so, at what time do we need to leave if we need to be in Narita by 1pm?

Hi Maria,

Thanks for your interest in Nagano! I have included answers to your questions below:

1. Christmas isn’t a big holiday in Japan so shops and restaurants shouldn’t be closed. By then, most ski resorts should be partially or fully-opened as well.

2. For night skiing on Dec. 25th, I think Shiga Kogen would be the best place to stay. The Ichinose and Kumanoyu ski areas should have night skiing at that time. You can see a range of accommodations in Shiga Kogen here.

Yamanouchi is at the base of Shiga Kogen and offers more hot springs to enjoy. A popular hot spring hotel with foreign guests is Ryokan Biyu no Yado. It has indoor and outdoor baths and also offers rooms with attached hot spring baths (but those will be quite expensive). If you were to stay here, you would need to rent a car to travel to Shiga Kogen for night skiing (buses don’t run late enough).

3. From Nagano Station to Narita International Airport is about 3 hours of train travel. Yamanouchi to Nagano is about another hour. If you leave around 8:00 in the morning you should be fine. You can use the Hyperdia Website to plan your train journey.

I hope that helps answer your question.
