My family will be visiting Matsumoto from the 8th to the 11th of October.
We will be travelling by train from Takaoka and travelling onward to Tokyo.
We will spend one day in Kamikochi but are thinking of also seeing the autumn colours at Tsugaike or Hakuba on our way to Matsumoto. We would like to walk for a couple of hours.
Which of Tsugaike or Hakuba would you recommend, and which would be easier when relying on public transport.
The Tsugaike line bus runs between Hakuba Station, Hakuba Happo and Tsugaike ski resorts.
For Hakuba Happo (Happo Pond), take the bus from the station to Hakuba Happo bus terminal and then walk 12 minutes to the Adam gondola station. Ride the gondola up the mountain and hike 90 minutes to the pond.
For Tsugaike Nature Park, take the bus from the station to Tsugaike Kogen and walk about 5 minutes to the gondola station. The park has around 5.5km worth of trail that takes about 3.5 hours to complete.
Since Hakuba Happo is closer to Hakuba Station, it would be the better choice time-wise. However, Tsugaike Nature park may offer you more walking trails than Hakuba Happo. Regardless, both have great autumn scenery.
I hope that helps you in your planning. Let me know if you have any other questions.
That’s great that you’re going to be coming and visiting Hakuba! Depending on the day you arrive in Hakuba there may be some events on that you may be interested in. Hakuba has an up to date events calendar on http://www.eventshakuba.com and hopefully you will be able to check one out 🙂
Safe travels and maybe I will see you in Hakuba.
Thank you both very much!
Do you happen to know if the railway station has luggage lockers? And one other question please. Is there a website you recommend to check the weather forecast for the area?
