What advice can you share with me if I drive from Nagoya Airport to Hakuba, Nagano in December?

What car rental companies can you recommend?

What are some things that I can do along the drive? Are there places of interest of which I can break my journey?

Hi Fui Foong,

Thanks for your question.

The trip from Chubu Centrair International Airport to Hakuba takes about 4.5 hours by car in fair weather conditions. Depending on snowfall, you may have to add another 1 to 2 hours.

You can see rental agencies at the airport here, and an article about renting cars in Nagano here.

Places to see along the way include:

  • The Kiso Valley and Nakasendo Trail
Flanked on either side by the Central Japanese Alps and Mt. Ontake, the Kiso Valley is characterized by its narrow, winding ravines and lush forests. One of Kiso’s most popular places to visit is the Nakasendo Trail, which connected Kyoto and Edo when the country’s capital changed over 200 years ago.
  • Star Village Achi and Hirugami Onsen
Located at the southern tip of Nagano Prefecture, Achi Village and Hirugami Onsen are surrounded by beautiful mountains and nature. In the evening, you can take a gondola to the top of the Heaven Sonohara Ski Resort and enjoy stargazing. Hirugami Onsen’s hot springs are great for relieving fatigue, and there are many places here to spend the night.
  • Senjojiki Cirque
Senjojiki Cirque is a rock formation high up in the central Japanese Alps, accessible via the Chuo Alps ropeway. From the top of the gondola at over 2,600m high, you can see spectacular views of the surrounding mountains.
  • Matsumoto Castle
Matsumoto Castle sits proudly in central Matsumoto City. You can see both the exterior and interior of the castle.
  • Daio Wasabi Farm
The Daio Wasabi Farm is one of the largest wasabi plantations in Japan. You can see how wasabi is produced and try a variety of wasabi-flavored snacks like croquettes and ice cream.

Let me know if you have any other questions!
