Hello, I’m traveling from 松本 >上高地 >平湯溫泉 >乘鞍高原 >平湯溫泉 >新穗高溫泉 >高山,do you think I should buy all the tickets at 松本 station, or to buy one at a time? And are there more than one bus company in the area? Is there a price difference? I saw on this website below that shows buses going from平湯溫泉to新穗高溫泉,新穗高ropeway. http://www.nouhibus.co.jp/ Umm…I thought “新穗高溫泉”&”新穗高ropeway” are suppose to be the same place… Can you give me a little introduction so I can have a better picture of where I’m heading? Thanks for your help! ~Maggie

The Shinhotaka ropeway is a part of Shinhotaka Onsen, but it would be inconvenient to walk from the center of the village all the way to the foot of the mountain. By bus, it’s about 13 minutes between the two.

In addition to the Nouhi bus company, the Alpico group also operates in the area, and they have created a joint pass that covers all of the places you want to visit. It’s called the Alps Wide Free Passport Shinshu/Hida. For 12,000 yen, you have 4 days of unlimited use of buses in the area as well as a roundtrip ticket on the Shinhotaka Ropeway. It can be purchased at the Matsumoto Bus Terminal or Shinshimashima Bus Terminal. You can see more information about the pass on Alpico’s website here(Japanese only), but it includes a useful map of the pass’s available area.

You could spend an entire day in each of the places you’ll be visiting (Norikura, Kamikochi, Shinhotaka Ropeway/Onsen, Takayama), so I definitely recommend the Free Passport for your trip.

I hope that answers your question.
