Hi Coco,

I’ve personally not been to the Ushiku Daibutsu or Ashikaga Flower Park, so I’m not sure I can say when/in what order you should visit them, but here are my thoughts on the other three.

Because the bus between Chino Station and Takato Castle Park only operates during the day, I would visit Takato immediately once you reach Chino from Shinjuku. If you have some time to kill before the next bus, you could visit the Chino City Museum next to the station.

After returning from Takato, travel to Kiso Fukushima and spend the night there. The next day, visit Narai before heading north towards to Takada Castle via the Chuo Local line to Shiojiri (24 min.), Wide View Shinano Express train to Nagano (60 min.) and then the Hokuriku Shinkansen to Joetsu Myoko (21 min.). You can spend the night nearby or take the train back to Tokyo to get a head start on visiting your last two destinations.

I recommend using Hyperdia to plan your train schedule.

Lastly, the portion of your route between Shiojiri and Narai/Kiso Fukushima is not covered by the JR East Nagano/Niigata pass, so you will pay that portion separately. (Approximately 1,500 yen for round-trip, plus 1,300 yen more if you use the express train.)

I hope that helps answer your question. Let me know if I can help with anything else.

Hi Thanks so much for your reply!

I review the schedule, plan to travel directly from Narita airport instead. so go straight to Joetsumyoko first look easier as Narita to Joetsumyoko (2hr 50min) vs to Chino 4 hr! my goodness 🙁

Question:

when use hyperdia to search for route, to be sure the route is covered by JR East Pass (Nagano. Niigata),

under search condition – vehicle, type, corp – is it all put tick? if not all put tick, which box shouldn’t tick?

so that I don’t take the route that’s not covered by the pass. But I understand that some short trip train Eg. to Narai need to pay separately as I can see it’s out of the pass ride area.

Thanks for your time!

On Hyperdia, normally all of the optional boxes will be ticked. If you remove a tick from one of the boxes, then Hyperdia will not include that option in your search. For example, if you uncheck the Bullet Train (SHINKANSEN) box under vehicle type, then Hyperdia will not show you any routes that use the shinkansen. If you uncheck the the private railway box under “Corp.”, then Hyperdia will only suggest routes that use JR line trains.

Unfortunately, Hyperdia does not have an option to show routes that are covered by the JR pass.

hi thanks for reply.

does it mean that I shouldn’t tick private railway box under Corp so that it only show JR train which should cover under the pass?

thanks!

Hi Coco,

Yes, removing private railways from your search will help ensure that you stay in the JR Pass coverage area. Some areas of the JR railway still aren’t covered, but on your trip it only looks like the section between Shiojiri and Kiso Fukushima/Narai.

I hope that helps.
