The beautiful northern alps are covered in snow, but green still shows in the valley.

Hakuba's mountains are beautifully covered in white.

Areas around the globe have been experiencing some crazy weather over the past month due to the dreaded El Niño effect. Wintery parts of the world have been unusually warm and green, and some areas of Japan have been reaching highs of 25℃ or more. It has also meant a late winter for Nagano prefecture, but don’t fear, folks: winter is here. The mountains are capped in white and ski resorts are open for business. Soon enough, your breath will be visible in your apartment and your shampoo will be freezing overnight.

On the right you can see an image from Nozawa Onsen’s Yamabiko live camera. They received a fresh dump last night and they’ll be opening for business starting tomorrow! The temperature is slowly dropping, and we can look forward to more precipitation to build the snow foundations on the slopes. See below for a list all of the ski resorts opening this weekend!

Many of you this year have shown interest in trying snowmobiling during your stay. As of yet there isn’t enough snow in the valley to begin snow-mobiling tours, but as soon as they’re available we’ll let you know. Hakuba Lion Adventures runs these tours at Hakuba 47 and in Shigakogen, and when they begin they’ll update their Facebook page. So look out for more information in the coming weeks!
