A section of trail leading to Mt. Ontake’s highest peak, Kengamine (3,607m), has been reopened as of today, Tuesday, September 26th, 2018. The peak will remain accessible until October 8th, 2018, when it will close for the season.
The peak can now be accessed from the majority of trails on Mt. Ontake, including the Kaida, Kurosawa, Hiwada, Kurumijima, and Kosaka trails. The peak is NOT accessible from the Otaki trail/Tanohara trailhead. See the map below for details.
The route is expected to be open in early July for the 2019 hiking season.
On September 27th, 2014 Mt. Ontake erupted, killing 58 mountain climbers near the volcanic crater. Following the disaster, the Volcanic Alert Level was raised from 1 to 2 and an area within a one kilometer radius of the crater was closed off to the public.
